I wrote Shameless because so many of us carry around the weight of shame, preventing us from experiencing true freedom, intimacy, and joy. As long as you allow yourself to be defined by the shame of what was done to you or the things you've done in your past, you will never be free. God commands us to "confess your sins to one another."
As a clinician, I understand that one of the reasons for that is to defeat shame. Many of us carry around this belief: "If you really knew me, you wouldn't like or love me." What I know to be true is that if you share the source of those lies with a safe person, the opposite is true. When you share that burden you've been carrying around for forever, and you experience acceptance, love and forgiveness, it creates true freedom. That freedom allows you to then accept your true, God-given identity, not the lies of your past.
