Trauma can be caused by emotional, physical or sexual abuse. It can be caused by seeing and experiencing terrible things as a combat veteran, first responder, or medical professional. You can experience trauma from being in an accident, or having a significant injury or serious illnesses. You can be traumatized by being a witness to something awful.

Trauma can also be caused by small emotional wounds delivered over time, such as bullying, growing up with emotionally unavailable or abusive parents, being compared to an older sibling, being told you'll never measure up, or being exposed to drug addiction, domestic violence, or criminal behaviors. Trauma can be caused by the misuse of religion to create shame, and many other reasons.

Trauma impacts our identity, our worth, and our physical being. Unresolved trauma can leave you in a state of constant hypervigilance, hyperreactivity, and hypersensitivity. You may find yourself overreacting to the smallest things, feeling completely hijacked by how you respond and wondering why this keeps happening to you. This can leave you feeling exhausted and hopeless.

Trauma leaves a lasting impact on a person’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being. In many instances, people who have suffered trauma may not even realize it until they begin to experience symptoms that negatively impact their daily lives.

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a time-tested and research proven method of resolving trauma. I'm a Certified EMDR and Certified Transformation EMDR therapist.
